Vigoro clips Popeyes, CrossFit earns draw

Team Vigoro had a good showing on the diamond.

The squad beat team Popeyes, 9-7, handing the chicken cookers their first loss of the season in week four of the Single A regular season.

The contest, part of the Cayman Islands Little League Association’s 25th season, was a tightly contested match after both starting pitchers tossed shutouts in their first inning. Popeyes scored five runs in the second, while holding Vigoro to three runs.

Andrea Tognazzo made an impressive debut as relief pitcher for Popeyes, notching up his first three strike-outs in his two innings pitched. Angelo Forbes came in to score his second run in the third inning, giving Popeyes a 7-3 lead. Vigoro fought their way back to make it 7-7 going into the last inning, thanks to powerhouse catcher Jake Murphy. Vigoro, last season’s champions, got Clara Ramos on base before Lashaun Samms crushed the ball, leading to a run. Rashaad Powery sealed the win with a home run.

In the other game, CrossFit 7 Milers and team Five Mile Capital could not be separated as the game ended 4-4 when the lights finally came down at the Field of Dreams. CrossFit jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when David Harris slid home after a wild pitch. CrossFit continued to threaten with Jaedan Pouchie and Gerson Henriques III on base, but Arie Ebanks settled down to strike out the final batter of the first inning.

In the home half of the inning, lead-off hitter Immanuel Duran singled to shallow center field and later scored for Five Mile when Dylan Reichard hit a sharp ground ball to first base, where Alejandro Holness managed to keep it in the infield, but was unable to beat the runner to first base on a “bang-bang” play. Duran struck out all three CrossFit batters in the second inning while opposing pitcher Gabriel Fisher surrendered two walks, struck out two batters and threw a wild pitch that allowed Jake Booker to score from third base. Fisher had six strikeouts by the third inning.

Harris, a third baseman, delivered in the clutch for CrossFit in the third inning, hitting a two-run double to center field off relief pitcher Reichard that scored Charlie Thomas and Tommy McGregor and leveled the contest at 3-3. Holness took the mound in the home half of the inning and struck out three Five Mile batters.

In the top of the final inning, Reichard struck out two hitters while walking Gabriel Fisher. Oliver Johns then smacked a single to right field that scored Fisher to give CrossFit a narrow 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Holness struck out the first batter before Reichard hit a ground ball into right field that turned into an inside-the-park home run. When the dust settled at home plate, Reichard was safe and the game ended in a fitting tie, as neither team deserved a loss after battling for two hours.
